Routing Via A Dhcp Allocated Gateway - MikroTik Script RouterOS
The Explanation
Sometimes a box can have a DHCP allocated address, but the gateway for that address is not automatically configured as the default gatway - perhaps you only want to route certain traffic out via that interface or maybe you have two routes out and need to route some traffic one way and others the other.
In my case, we have a standard ROS configuration with up to three interfaces running DHCP clients. We want to run traffic over tunnels (so the default route is over the tunnel interface), but the tunnel bearer connection needs to be routed out via one of the gateways on one of the interfaces. Since the gateway addresses are allocated by DHCP, we can't hard code them in (and we wouldn't want to anyway as this means we can't run a one-configuration-fits-all approach).
So...
This script utilises routing rules and routing tables to force traffic to certain destinations out over the DHCP allocated gateway for a specified interface.
The script creates a default gateway (0.0.0.0/0) pointing to the IP address of the gateway allocated to the DHCP client. However, it requires traffic using this default route to have a routing mark ('ether1_force' or somesuch). So this gateway doesn't apply to 'normal' traffic.
It then adds a routing rule which says 'any traffic to IP address W.X.Y.Z *must* use routing table 'ether1_force'. Essentially this adds a routing mark to traffic bound for that IP address. The flexibility of this means that if you want, you can manually add more routing rules pointing to the same table and the scheduled script doesn't need to know about them - all it cares about is the routing entry itself and that there is only one routing entry it needs to worry about.
